It has only been a few days but I'm getting used to turning
off the power when my girlfriend goes to bed. It seems counterintuitive. At
night is when power companies have off-peak energy. The stories of power
companies pushing water up hill because they have to burn off excess energy are
true. So why am I going to the trouble of not using energy at a time where it
is best? I haven't exactly. I run appliances at night: dish washer, clothes
washer, and even dryer. I'm just trying to cut down on the nonessentials:
television and lights.
The first night of staying up late I used the remaining paraffin
candles we had. It was difficult to position them to read. Once I figured
something out though I got some extra reading in. With a trip to Whole Foods we
found a couple of beeswax tapers for about $9 for two of them. Not terrible. We
swung by our local Goodwill and picked up two candleholders for $2. Now I can
carry them around at night from room to room as I need light.
Excuse the messy house |
So what are the benefits?
Not only am I getting more reading done (which I still think
it is better to read a physical book than an ebook, with an ebook there is
always the chance of jumping around on the usually internet connected device),
I am sleeping much better. There are tons of studies on how artificial light negatively
impacts sleep. Now after a certain time I have zero exposure to artificial
light and am sleeping better for it. I do use my iPhone for an alarm but I set
it much earlier in the day so I don't look at it an hour or so before bed. I
haven't burned myself yet. And I can expand my mind as opposed to rotting my
brain.
I'll let you all know how it goes throughout the month.
