Book Review: The Story Of Stuff

written by Annie Leonard

published by Free Press

ISBN: 143912566X

This book should be renamed "The Book That Makes You Never Want To Buy Anything New Ever Again."

The Story Of Stuff was a 20-minute video that popped up on the web a few years ago (2007) explaining our cycle of consumption and the problems with it. It also offered a few suggestions of how to deal with the problem that arose. The book came out in 2009 and went in a bit more in depth as to how Stuff is extracted, produced, distributed, consumed, and disposed of. Leonard adds many stories how things she witnessed and fought for in the effort to make Stuff more sustainable and cutting down on toxins made along the way.

This book makes me question lots of things that I have been doing, which is good. We need to stop every now and again and question whether what we are doing is right. I have boycotted Wal-Mart for some time and now I can add Disney to that list. It is sad to know all of these things are happening but knowing them is the only way we are going to stop them.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.
5 out of 5
