We were walking around Cincinnati last week and we came
across Segway Of Cincinnati.
They do Segway tours of the city and they sell both Segways and electric bikes.
What took my interest was this:
It is an electric bike that can to up to 20 miles per hour
for 20 miles (an additional battery can be added giving it a 40 mile range). My commute to work is about 13 miles both ways. In theory I could
ride this back and forth to work without using any gasoline and still make it
there fairly quick. The bikes are around $3000.00 new but they do sell used
ones for about $1K less. Still pricey, but cheaper than buying another car. I
spend about $1500.00 on gas a year so it would pay for itself in about two
years and start saving me money after that.
I’m not moving forward with it just yet. I need to first
find a way to pay for it and second find a way to charge it without using coal.
And last, I would need to find a safe path to travel on.
But it is nice to have something to shoot for. And it would
be nice to have one less car on the road.
