Fighting Off Vampire Power With Belkin

Vampire power has a scary name (or a name that used to be associated with scary things instead of melodramatic teen nonsense) because it fits a scary thought. Vampire power, more commonly referred to as standby power, is power that things continue to draw even when they are not on. This can add up to 10% of the power your home uses! What a huge waste of money.

The number one culprit is television. For years it has been feeding on our brains and now it is feeding on our power when we aren’t even using it. The fastest way to combat this is with the use of power strips. Plug in everything to the power strip and turn it of when you aren’t using it. The only problem with this is reached the strip to turn it off. For a few years we’ve used the Belkin Conserve Switch. It is a power strip with a little remote that we keep in easy reach so there is no digging around for it.

Not the one I'm using, but I couldn't dig it out

And something that I acquired yesterday to help fight charging power is the Belkin Conserve Socket. It is a little socket to plug into your outlets that has a timer. After a set period of time (30 minute, 3 hours, or 6 hours) the socket shuts off the power coming from the outlet. This is a cool little device you can use for anything that needs charging but doesn’t need to charge all the time or continue to charge after it is full. We are using it on one of our phones and will get more as we get money for them:
