Yesterday we took a trip to Finley Market in Cincinnati. Finley
Market is the oldest continuously operated public market in Ohio. It has quite
a few options for buying locally grown and raised food. It is always a cool
place to go to but here are some of the things we found yesterday that add to
our green lifestyle.
Beeswax and Honey
I’ve been trying to use less electricity on things that
aren’t necessary. One thing that you can cut electricity back on is light. As
it begins to cool off you can burn candles and use them for light versus having
lights on and burning coal. The most common candle is paraffin, which is not
good for you (they give off the same kind of fumes as your car exhaust only a
much smaller amount). The next better choice is soy, but I prefer the clean
burn of beeswax. It has been hard to locate any other than at Whole Foods and
they added something to theirs to give it color and scent. We came across Bee Haven Honey at the market where they
had quite a few beeswax candles to choose from.
There were plain tapers:

Tea candles and a wax lantern:
We ended up getting some tapers and tea candles. I think I’m
going to go back and get a lantern soon to see if I can brighten up the rooms
with them.
They also sold honey. I’m a big fan of honey for the taste
and the other things you can use it in such as bread. Thought they had a few
different kinds we ended up getting raw honey. Local raw honey is supposed to
help with your allergies. We’ll see how well that works (there are some dangers
associated with raw honey so make sure you read up on it before trying it).

Flavored Honey:
The proprietor was nice enough and patient enough to answer
all of my crazy questions. I will definitely be going back and I recommend them
to everyone.
After buying some bee-based products we wondered over to Skirtz &
Johnston and bought some granola for our homemade yogurt. We also split a
cannoli. From the bakery we saw that they had installed solar panels on the
roof, which of course made me ecstatic.

We walked around more checking out everything they had
before we stopped in to get something a little more substantial than a cannoli.
We stopped at a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Lang Thang. I couldn’t
name what we had there but we ended up splitting a pretty good vegetarian meal
that consisted of cucumbers, carrots, tofu, rise noodles and some sort of
sprout.
