An In-Depth Look At Making Dishwashing Detergent Part 2

In a previous post I went over how to make your own dishwashing detergent from natural, household items. It is a good detergent and we use it often. The only problem with it, is that is tends to clump up. So, I decided to try a different recipe and clump it up on purpose, making my own dishwashing detergent tabs.

What you'll need for this recipe is 1 cup of Borax:

1 Cup of Washing Soda:

¼ cup of salt:

And 2/3 cup of lemon juice:

Add the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. I mixed everything up under the range in my kitchen with the fan on. It isn't a good idea to breath in Borax. I used a metal spoon so I could crush up all of the little clumps as I went. It is a good idea to get it mixed up as much as possible before adding the lemon juice:

I added the lemon juice a little at a time while mixing it up. There will be a little foaming but that's alright. When you are mixed up enough it should be a yellow paste:

I took some old ice cube trays that we don't use:

And I packed the mixture into the trays real tight:

I let the mixture sit over night and then popped them all out:

Drop the tab into the dishwasher the same way you would with any other tab. It works and it is all natural.

Price:

Borax                          42¢
Washing Soda            43¢
Salt                              <1¢
Lemon Juice               38¢

So it cost $1.23 for 24 tabs. It didn't take very long and it is real easy to use. Give it a whirl and let me know how it turns out.
